WHO ARE THE EAST ROCK RANGERS?
The East Rock Rangers is a club formed in 2025 by a small group of friends and neighbors in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. The bylaws of the club say that, “The East Rock Rangers is a club which exists to foster in good nature among its members and the community an appreciation, understanding, and exploration of the local natural environment—its recreational, scientific, aesthetic, and spiritual attributes—in southern Berkshire County, in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.”
WHO CAN BE A RANGER?
Anyone sixteen and older may join at the invitation of the club, after they express a sincere interest in joining to a current Ranger and complete the application form. To encourage full participation in all Ranger meetings and actives it is necessary for Rangers to live in or very near southern Berkshire County. The bylaws say that “Rangers and prospective Rangers must demonstrate an appreciation for the natural environment, posses a spiritual curiosity, and conduct themselves as good neighbors.” Furthermore: “The East Rock Rangers will not discriminate by race, color, religion, gender, sex or sexuality, national origin, disability, or political party.” A non-voting and honorary Junior Rangership is available to those fifteen and younger.
WHAT HAPPENS AT THE INDUCTION CEREMONY?
At the induction ceremony the candidate for Rangership takes an oath and makes certain pledges to care for the environment, be a good neighbor, and be an active member of the group. The ceremony takes place in the evening at East Rock.
WHAT DOES IT COST?
The cost of joining is $36, which pays for the green sash and Ranger badge which will be presented to you at the induction ceremony. For people who can’t pay this fee the organization can cover it. At the moment there are no regular dues, but this is likely to change in the future.
WHAT DO RANGERS DO?
Four times a year the Rangers hold an official meeting where Rangers present on topics related to the local natural environment. Rangers also share secret knowledge of favorite off-the-beaten-path spots. We are in the early stages of planning what actives the club might carry out. But principally, you will join a fellowship of local people who have a love for and a knowledge of the forest right here in our backyard.
